Before you start:

The best way to achieve a super smooth finish on your cabinets is to spray paint them. You can easily rent a spray painter for the weekend at your local Home Depot or Lowe’s store. You’ll want to use a paintbrush for the cabinet frames because it can get a bit messy to use the spray paint inside.

Step 1. Remove the cabinets and clean them

Unscrew the cabinets from their frames and remove their hardware. Take the cabinets out to your backyard or driveway and lay them on a large tarp. If you don’t have outdoor space, you can paint them in your garage – but it will get smelly. Thoroughly wipe down the cabinets and clean them of any grease and grime. Do the same for the cabinet boxes in your kitchen.

Step 2. Prep + prime

Sand down the cabinets and frames with 150-320 grit sand paper. This will help the primer form a good bond to the wood. Make sure to wipe down the cabinets afterward to remove leftover dust. Next, apply primer with a paintbrush to the cabinets and frame, and wait 1-2 hours for it to dry.

Step 3. Paint!

Optional: if you want a super sleek look, you can sand down the cabinets once again after priming. To start painting, follow the instructions that come with your rented paint sprayer to fill it with paint. Some people suggest mixing the paint with water and Floetrol as this results in a more level coat of paint when sprayed. Step 4. Reassemble

Once the cabinets and frame are dry, bring all of the pieces back into the kitchen. Reassemble your cabinets with your existing hardware, or new hardware if you’re looking to update your look!
